Colleges for Students with Asperger's: The Very Friendly Ones

These are colleges with identified programs for students with Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger's Syndrome is a term used for students who may have difficulty adjusting to social situations, picking up social cues, and making transitions. Marcia Rubinstien, an educational consultant in Hartford, Connecticut, chose these colleges on the basis of factors such as acceptance of social and learning style differences, a good support system in residence life and academic affairs, easy access to disability support, and trained faculty and staff. Such characteristics might be appropriate for a wide range of students.

What about the UA-ACTS program at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa? On paper it looks like a really good program.

I visited several of these campuses with my child. U of A was our first choice, since it is in our home state. However, upon meeting with the Disabilitiy Resourse Department, My child was told "maybe you better stay home for another year until you work through your challenges". My child left that office thinking he would never go to college. He did enroll in an Aspergers program at another University and is doing well. Too bad we still run into uneducated DSR Counselors.
