Bates College, founded in 1855, is a highly selective private liberal arts college. Its 109-acre campus is in Lewiston, Maine, 35 miles northeast of Portland. Bates is recognized for its inclusive social character and progressive tradition. It is distinctive for uncommonly high collegiality between faculty and students, often resulting in lifelong professional relationships and friendships. The relationship begins in a first-year seminar (15 students) and ends in a one-on-one senior thesis. In between, opportunities abound for college-funded summer research, co-publication and conference presentations, and internships. Bates is a small college with a big reach: Most students (70%) study abroad and are active in civic engagement here at home. More than half participate in community-based learning, research, and service. Bates students come from 45 states and districts and 65 countries.
